Advancing the Use of Alternative Transportation Fuels

The transportation sector is taking advantage of compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) to lower fuel costs. In some sectors, such as the waste hauling industry, more natural gas trucks are being produced each year than traditional, diesel-powered ones.

Biomethane and liquid biofuels provide an opportunity to supply affordable, clean, domestically-sourced energy to U.S. and global energy customers. Thermal, chemical, and catalytic processes can turn renewable biomass resources into biomethane or longer-chain hydrocarbons such as gasoline, jet, or diesel fuel that can be used in the motor, aviation, and marine fuel pools.

By using biomethane, also referred to as renewable natural gas (RNG), as a transportation fuel, natural gas vehicles (NGVs) can increase biofuel usage and produce less greenhouse gases (GHG) than any other transportation fuel.

GTI's research teams are working on several fronts to foster the adoption of NGVs. GTI is developing technologies which support next-generation CNG and LNG vehicles and engines. Scientists and engineers are testing and developing new components and systems, and developing and deploying alternative fueling stations. Our solutions have also advanced the use of hydrogen (H2) as a transportation fuel.

In addition, we are playing a major role in advancing the use of alternative transportation fuels, with activities encompassing a broad range of biofuel production technologies.

GTI offers an extensive slate of customized and standardized LNG training programs, as well as online/self-study courses.

Our publications, technical reports, and software are essential sources of information for anyone involved in the LNG business. We can also provide knowledge-based services that can be used to complement or supplement a company’s internal expertise in LNG.
