Establishing Protocols and Best Practices to Meet Integrity Management Requirements

GTI Energy has developed Guided Wave Ultrasonic Testing (GWUT) implementation protocols for LDCs to use in assessing difficult situations such as pipeline road crossings, meter-regulator stations, bare (uncoated) pipe, and cased pipe sections. Many operators have used these protocols as the basis for direct assessment in their Pipeline Integrity Management (PIM) plans and for conducting assessments on their pipelines. The report is available from GTI Energy and includes the published NACE standard.

From 2002 through 2004, GTI Energy and the American Gas Association (AGA) worked together to help local distribution companies (LDCs) that operate natural gas transmission lines meet federal PIM regulations. Working with more than 30 LDCs, standards development organizations (SDOs), and pipeline regulatory agencies, GTI Energy developed a common methodology for implementing external corrosion direct assessment (ECDA) and internal corrosion direct assessment (ICDA) protocols.
