GTI Energy is pleased to announce a Call for Papers for tcbiomass2024—an international conference on thermochemical (TC) biomass conversion science in the greater Chicagoland area, 10-12 September 2024 at the Westin Hotel in Itasca, IL, USA.

The Technical Program Committee is now soliciting abstracts of 250 to 300 words through May 15, 2024 via the Abstracts page on the tcbiomass2024 website. Researchers and technology developers can take advantage of this opportunity to share process innovations, improvements, and insights.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) has again joined GTI Energy to co-host tcbiomass2024, which focuses on the science of thermochemical conversion of biomass and municipal solid waste (MSW) to renewable gas (RNG), liquid fuels, and chemicals. This unique conference, with a theme of Achieving A Net Zero Future, highlights real-world commercial opportunities.

Developments in the conversion of renewable resources into a variety of fuels, chemicals, and energy products are driving the emergence of an increasingly diverse and significant bioeconomy and tcbiomass2024 will bring people together to discuss this in depth.

Pedro Ortiz-Toral, GTI Energy’s Program Director, Bioenergy; Robert Baldwin, Principal Scientist at NREL; and Berend Vreugdenhil, Senior Scientist at TNO and Chair of IEA Bioenergy Task 33 – Gasification, are the conference chairs for this event.

This is the eighth biennial conference and it is expected to draw from all over the world, with past attendees representing 30 different countries and approximately 200 organizations. Building off the success of past sessions, tcbiomass2024 is anticipated to attract researchers, scientists, engineers, developers, policymakers, commercializers, and funders for three days of keynote presentations, including topics on technology commercialization and deployment activities, focused peer-reviewed scientific presentations, exhibits, and posters.

“I am excited to co-chair this year’s tcbiomass conference and I look forward to carrying its long legacy forward,” said Pedro Ortiz-Toral. “The conference will once again highlight the role that advanced conversion of biomass can and must play in achieving global economy-wide, net zero carbon goals. It is the place to be for technical and business networking that will enable these developments and deployments to become possible and with the urgency they require. I am also excited the conference agenda will focus on biorenewable products as well, as we aim to empower renewable products and fueling into the net zero future.”

“I consider this to be among the pre-eminent conferences of its kind in the world,” added Robert Baldwin. “We at NREL are pleased to be able to co-host the event with GTI Energy again this year. Insight into key areas of technology development, market deployment, and needed supporting policies will be presented based on panel discussions from industry leaders, renowned scientists, and government officials.”

“Thermochemical processes, like pyrolysis and gasification, allow the production of high-value molecules from biomass, which avoids the use of fossil resources,” noted Berend Vreugdenhil. “At tcbiomass2024, participants will hear the latest insights into these developments. This conference is always an ideal mix of industry and academia, bringing value to all its participants.”

The conference will also host a competitive Student Poster Challenge to help connect top engineering students with global bioenergy experts. Winning individuals or teams will be awarded with a scholarship and international exposure. Students interested in participating should submit their abstracts by May 15, 2024. Abstracts will be peer reviewed and selected as either oral or poster presentations.

An optional tour of GTI Energy’s facilities, dinner, and networking activities are part of this important event. Sponsorship and exhibitor opportunities are available.
