GTI Energy Launches SUSTAIN H2 to Accelerate Underground Hydrogen Storage Development
The SUSTAIN H2 collaborative will unite researchers, policymakers, and industry leaders to bridge the gap between research on underground hydrogen storage and its deployment
Today, GTI Energy introduced SUSTAIN H2 , a new collaboration designed to fast-track the deployment of underground hydrogen storage (UHS) technologies. This effort will bring together researchers, policymakers, regulators, and industry leaders to bridge the critical gap between hydrogen storage research and application.
Hydrogen has the potential to revolutionize energy storage by converting surplus renewable energy, such as wind and solar into hydrogen, and providing large-scale, long-duration storage solutions. Stored hydrogen can be utilized for a variety of demand applications, from transportation to industrial use, or blended with natural gas using existing pipeline networks. Effective implementation of a hydrogen economy will hinge on the development of large-scale, low-cost storage solutions, which will ensure uninterrupted, affordable, and secure energy.
“Collaborations like SUSTAIN H2 are critical for realizing the promise of hydrogen in decarbonizing our communities,” said Paula Gant, Ph.D., President and CEO, GTI Energy. “At GTI Energy, we understand the need for innovative storage solutions at scale and are committed to progressing energy infrastructure and storage required to shape energy systems with speed and at scale."
“While discussions around hydrogen often focus on production and consumption, the infrastructure that connects these stages—particularly pipelines and storage facilities—has not received the same level of attention,” said Shadi Salahshoor, Ph.D., Senior Program Manager, GTI Energy. “SUSTAIN H2 aims to explore opportunities for collaboration and complementary activities that expedite the deployment of UHS, ultimately resulting in significant time and cost savings.”
Success depends on the inclusion of a mix of perspectives and real-world insights. SUSTAIN H2 will convene stakeholders from across the spectrum who are committed to advancing UHS.
