Developing an Integrated Thermoelectric System to Mitigate Methane Emissions Effectively

methane mitigation thermoelectric generator (MMTEG)/burner photoGTI Energy has developed a methane mitigation thermoelectric generator (MMTEG) system for gas field applications with funding from the Department of Energy National Energy Technology Laboratory. The system integrates a thermoelectric generator to provide power to compress air that is used instead of natural gas to operate the pneumatic controllers. The team designed the system, created a retrofit for gas well production sites, and tested it in a lab environment.

Results indicate the MMTEG system minimized natural gas venting and leakage by 97%, and reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 1000x. GTI Energy is currently pursuing a field test of the system.
