To accelerate greenhouse gas (GHG) reductions beyond energy efficiency gains, we are working with innovative companies that are developing equipment and the supporting business models to recover carbon at individual end user locations. GHG emissions from buildings account for approximately 12% of the GHG output in the U.S.
GTI Energy is exploring options for distributed carbon capture at the point of use. With the financial support of Utilization Technology Development, NFP ("UTD"), we are evaluating and helping advance an innovative point-source technology that captures carbon from building heating system exhaust for Canadian company CleanO2. Their CARBiN-X uses a chemical process to convert the CO2 into a stable carbonate to produce soaps and detergents for the consumer market.
