LNG 101: From Foundation to Fluency
In-person | LNG Center of Excellence at McNeese State University

Course Overview:

LNG 101: From Foundation to Fluency is designed for professionals who are new to the liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry or have up to three years of LNG-related experience. This practical, instructor-led course builds the foundational knowledge needed to understand LNG properties, cryogenic behavior, facility systems, specialized equipment, and common operating challenges.

Moving beyond a basic introduction to LNG, the course connects fundamental concepts with real-world facility operations and applications. Participants explore how LNG behaves during storage, transfer, commissioning, processing, and changing operating conditions—and how those behaviors influence equipment integrity, reliability, maintenance, and safe operations.

Real-world examples and applied discussions help participants develop the technical fluency needed to communicate effectively and contribute confidently within LNG operations, engineering, maintenance, reliability, and project teams.

Target Audience:

  • LNG facility personnel with 0–3 years of experience
  • Engineers transitioning into LNG operations, design, commissioning, or project roles
  • Operations, maintenance, reliability, and technical personnel seeking a stronger LNG foundation
  • Technical specialists supporting LNG plants, terminals, peak-shaving facilities, and related infrastructure
  • Project and support personnel who regularly interact with LNG operations and engineering teams
  • Organizations seeking to establish a common baseline of LNG knowledge and terminology across multidisciplinary team

CEU | PDH Requirements:

For this course, to receive CEU and PDH credits, users must attend each day of class, complete the course evaluation, and pass the final exam with a score of 80% or higher.

  • Recognize LNG-specific hazards and operating conditions
  • Describe the purpose and function of key LNG systems and equipment
  • Participate more effectively in technical discussions
  • Apply LNG fundamentals to real-world operating situations.

Topics Covered:

  • LNG & Cryogenic Fundamentals — LNG physical properties; effects of temperature, pressure, and composition; cryogenic behavior; and the fundamentals that distinguish LNG systems from conventional natural gas facilities.
  • Unique LNG Operating Phenomena — Stratification, rollover, weathering, flashing, geysering, water hammer, and two-phase flow, including how these conditions can affect facility operations and equipment.
  • Commissioning, Purging & Moisture Control — Cryogenic system commissioning and cooldown; nitrogen purging; contamination prevention; dew point verification; and the importance of moisture control before introducing LNG.
  • Boil-Off Gas Management — Causes of boil-off gas (BOG), operating impacts, andcommon management approaches including recovery, de-superheating, compression, and recondensing.
