Creating a Process-Based Approach to Pipeline Safety Management Systems

GTI Energy is preparing utilities and operators for compliance with API RP 1173 by identifying and assessing requirements needed for a pipeline safety management system (PSMS). A process-based approach to PSMS that uses business analysis tools to reduce complex systems into actionable improvements has been created by our team.

With OTD funding, we are currently working with Southern Company Gas to execute a pilot demonstration that will use the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) process to provide a holistic view and integration across the entire organization’s business systems, resources, and processes. GTI Energy has also developed plans to execute additional pilots. This guidance will help the industry systematically manage pipeline safety performance, as well as track and measure progress.
