August 13 - 14, 2025 | Des Plaines, Illinois

2025 SAGE Conference Recap
Hosted at GTI Energy’s Des Plaines headquarters on August 13-14, 2025, the two-day conference featured technical talks, panel discussions, exhibits, and networking opportunities, sponsored by leading technology and service companies.
The first day of the conference focused on GIS topics: spatial data, technologies, and analytics. A central theme was the need and benefits of data interoperability, and how integrating data systems can drive more efficient and strategic energy system management.
Keynote speaker Erik Gakstatter kicked things off by providing insight on the evolution of GNSS and GPS technologies, highlighting the advancements and identifying the final frontiers of these and other positioning systems. Monique Robert’s keynote presentation showcased how the Pipeline Open Data Standard (PODS) Association supports accurate, reliable, and complete data records.
Throughout the session, speakers and panelists representing local distribution companies, national laboratories, academia, and NGOs shared their insights in solving spatial data challenges in the energy industry.
The day ended with a social mixer featuring exhibits from conference sponsors Esri, Irth, UTTO, ABB, Bad Elf, EOS, Project Canary, Locusview, SensorUp, and Southern Cross. We are incredibly grateful to our sponsors for their support of this inaugural conference.
Day two shifted focus to big data and modern analytics such as artificial intelligence (AI). Keynote speaker Dr. Steve Liang began the session by reviewing the potential for widespread and integrated sensors to inform transformative AI solutions. A panel on AI explored its deployment within local distribution companies, how it is being used to advance sustainability, and it’s role in energy demand modeling. Other panelists shared best practices and spoke to the advantages of building out solutions internally versus buying from external contractors, as well as the importance of identifying prime use cases for AI. Technical talks showcased the powerful potential of big data, data analyses, and integrating new technologies.
From the opening keynote to the final technical presentation, our first SAGE Conference provided an intimate opportunity for stakeholders to showcase and learn about cutting-edge solutions and technologies, exchange insights, and explore the role of data, analytics, and geospatial technologies in their operations.
We are thrilled at the success of this inaugural event. As one attendee noted, “This event is a good way to expand our knowledge by looking at how data is being used across many fields. If you don’t walk away with a new breakthrough idea, I’d be surprised.” We look forward to continuing to foster a community of practitioners dedicated to innovating energy systems through data.
