October 2023—Mechanical Completion Ribbon-Cutting Event

In late October, the team celebrated the opening of the high-efficiency Supercritical Transformational Electric Power (STEP) Demo test facility in San Antonio.

Many distinguished guests joined in to commemorate the occasion, including U.S. Department of Energy officials, elected government representatives, Joint Industry Program (JIP) partners, and other important business leaders.

Successful energy transitions require innovation and cross-industry collaboration. GTI Energy is excited to lead this effort to enable next-generation power plants to decarbonize energy systems and meet the demand for versatile and resilient clean energy.

This facility is a first-of-a-kind 10 MWe pilot power plant to validate the supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO2) Brayton power cycle. The sCO2 power technology can revolutionize power generation, maximizing efficiency and ensuring cleaner, flexible, and reliable power.

The project successfully achieved sCO2 fluid conditions in early 2023, has been commissioning components, and was mechanically completed in October. System commissioning is underway and full-scale testing is expected to begin in early 2024.

The test facility will generate valuable data to help optimize the design and performance of sCO2 power systems. This data will play a pivotal role in the development of commercial sCO2 power plants that can be deployed around the world.
